Scientists declared that the high tax on cigs packs represent a very hard wall between kids and smoking addiction. This is a new legislation which can protect minors from starting smoking.
In the past, when smoking was not consider harmful, in Alaska a pack of cigarettes could be less than 30 cents. In 1984 Alaska Legislature found that second-hand smoke is a significant health hazard, and enacted a law concerning smoking in public places. This is the first anti-tobacco legislation introduced in Alaska.
Today the situation is another. For example, the average price of a pack of 20 cigarettes in Alaska is $6.85, according to a recent study.
The Alaska Youth Risk Behavior Survey reported that only 5 percent of high school students declared that they smoke cigarettes in 20 of the last 30 days.
In general, Alaskans have a strong anti-tax streak, but not when it comes to tobacco. The state taxes a $2-a-pack tax, and the city of Anchorage tacks on $1.45, making Anchorage the fifth-highest cigarette taxing rule in the United States. The hill, the Mat-Su Borough, Sitka and Juneau are four of five jurisdictions tied for eighth, at $3 per pack in combined state and local taxes.
Since the 1990s, one of the most powerful debates Alaskans have used to increase cigarette and other tobacco taxes has been simply that high prices discourage smoking and declining by young people. Officials from Alaska are sure that if kids don't start smoking, they will not get addicted and that’s mean that they never start at all.
At $6.85 a pack, young Alaskans may decide that better will be to buy something else, more needful than cigarettes. Smokers and even non-smokers have explained that smokers are being stopped to buying cigs because of high taxes. Unfortunately kids are minority not majority.
In general tobacco is an addictive product, which increases its killing, crippling and aggravating power. Even though cigarettes are consider deadly, tobacco use has earned its tax load and even at that, rarely covers the $10.28-per-pack cost in disease grief reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers recently found that the high taxes on cigarettes are the only reason Alaska high school students are smoking less.
