Frequently the advertising on cigarette packaging attracts many minors into stating smoking. However, still now countries never think to ban these ads.
But recently Australia planned to become the first country in the world to prohibit these advertisings as it hopes to combat the most important preventable cause of lung disease and premature death.
Health Minister of Australia, Nicola Roxon decided to enforce a legislation which will prohibit plain packs, which will prohibit t the use of Tobacco Company logos, which will prohibit brand description or promotional text. The cigarettes packets will show only health warnings and fundamental product information for retailers.
"This is actually the last residual boundary and Australia will be the first country to take this new action. What it makes totally clear is that cigarettes aren’t very cool and really kill people and the packaging shouldn’t cover that fact," said Roxon.
Statistics show that the smoking habit kills approximately 15,000 Australians yearly and the government goal is to decrease the smokers’ rate to 10 percent or even less. For example in 1945, almost three-quarters of adult men and a quarter of adult women used to smoke, according to Australia’s Institute of Health and Welfare.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared in a recent report that the number of Australians who continue to smoke has been increased more than halved in the past 20 years. Unlike other developed countries Australia had the third-lowest rate of smokers, afterwards Sweden and the U.S.
The Australian government plans also to enforce a harsh rise in cigarettes prices. Currently the cigarettes prices raised 26.22 Australian cents per cigarette and in the future it will rises twice per year.
Tobacco Companies like Philip Morris International Inc. can gain as much as $3 billion (or $2.8 billion) because these new laws may mean they will lose their trade name, researchers reported.
Cigarettes makers were interdicted also from marketing tobacco products to people aged under 18 years old. The limitations, announced last month, prohibit tobacco industries from distributing branded goods such as T-shirts.
The FDA has declared that it will appeal a U.S. court decision to cancel part of the law.
