Is Smoking Ban a Big Step?

As all of us know smoking was banned in public places, but not all know what city introduced such a law for the first time. Please note that San Luis Obispo became the first city in the nation which made indoor smoking in public places illegal.

Recently the City Council has another chance to defend public health. It will banning smoking at some outdoor places, involving city parks, sports facilities, trails and open spaces.

Several other jurisdictions have adopted similar bans, but it’s however a big step and one the City Council should not hesitate to take.

Of course this is first and notable legislation for public health. According to a 2006 report from the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no harmless level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

Researchers added that also lighting up out doesn’t make the danger go away. As almost all studies about cigarette smoking have shown that even outdoors, nonsmokers in the vicinity of a light cigarette show measurable, and dangerous effect from that exposure.

That’s why they would like to see the smoking ban eventually spread to downtown sidewalks and benches as well. However SLO merchants are worried that it could be another attack to their business, at a time when they can least affords it. That may be also a reason to delay a more extensive ban, but the idea should not be leaved.

Anti-tobacco researchers urge all countries to adopt the ban on smoking in public recreation areas and to set a time to revisit the issue. Smokers may see this step as yet another punitive measure aimed at reducing their legal right to light up, but this not true.

No one, except smokers, do not believe that tobacco users are treated like vagabonds. However smokers haven’t the right to risk the health of others.

For example for other smokers smoking ban in public places is a way of helping them quit. "I think that it will help me quit. We're conscious of other people. We don't smoke if it bothers people," said a smoker.
