Secondhand Smoke

You don’t have to be a smoker in order to be affected by the harmful tobacco smoke. Secondhand smoke is an unnoticeable smoke that escapes from the burning end of a cigarette. It is also the smoke that exhales from a smoker. Secondhand smoke comprises 50 chemical substances that may lead to cancer.

Exposure to secondhand smoke is often called as passive smoking. It is generally concentrated indoors, where passive smoking is considered the major pollutant. The indoor level of harmful tobacco substances exceeds the national air quality standard established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for outdoor air.

In present many states pass smoking bans in order to make various public places smoke-free zones. But people continue to smoke at their homes and cars. According to statistics at home children are exposed to secondhand smoke to a great extend if compared to adults. About 25% of children at the age of 3 to 11 live with at least one smoker. And only about 7% of nonsmoking adults live with a smoker.

Secondhand smoke is the leading cause of 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year at nonsmokers, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute. EPA placed secondhand smoke in Group A for its carcinogenic properties that may cause cancer in humans.

Secondhand smoke is very dangerous for everyone, especially for young and old people. Those parents who smoke expose their newborn and young children to harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

According to EPA from year to year secondhand smoking increases the cases of lower respiratory tract infections in 150,000 - 300,000 children younger than 18 months old. This horrific situation leads to between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalized children each year.

Unborn babies who are exposed to secondhand smoke in womb are:

• More likely to born prematurely, having various neurological and breathing deficiencies.
• More liable to different infections and diseases after birth.

Newborn of less than 1 year who are exposed to secondhand smoke have higher risk to death syndrome.

Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to:

• Have bronchitis and pneumonia more often.
• Have severe asthma attacks, about 40% of children with asthma cases live with at least one who smokes.

Adults who are exposed to secondhand smoke are at a higher risk to have:

• Lung cancer
• Heart attack
• Increased LDL

Tips on how to minimize exposure to secondhand smoke:

• Avoid smoking at home, smoke outdoors and away from others.
• Dine in nonsmoking restaurants or sit in nonsmoking areas.
• Make sure that your child’s school and other places where he/she spends time are nonsmoking. Hire a non-smoking babysitter for your child.
