New Yorkers are those people who like to enjoy the cigarettes smoke. However, starting with next month they would pay for their favorite smoking brands much more than usually. Stating with July 1 the state will has the highest cigarette taxes in the country.
Kevin S. Parker of Brooklyn and the other 31 Democrats in the State Senate all of them voted to raise the cigarettes tax by $1.60 a pack.
The new legislation, part of a reserve budget measure for to keep the government running, added more $1.60 in state taxes to every cigarette pack sold starting on July 1, pushing the normal price of a pack to approximately $9.20.
The usual price in New York City, which forced its own cigarette taxes, will be even higher, almost $11 a pack. Those who like to smoke other smoking products will also be forced to pay much more money for them.
So, even the tax on smokeless tobacco will more than double, to $2 a unit from 96 cents an ounce, starting with August 1. And the complete tax on cigars and other tobacco products will rise to 75 percent from 46 percent.
Starting with September 1, the state will begin gathering and collect taxes on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations. Even an Indian chief has declared that trying to collect taxes would be an act of new war.
This is the main cause why Gov. David A. Paterson had proposed only a not big increase of $1 a pack in his executive budget proposal, declaring that it would prevent deeper cuts to state health care wasting.
But with the state budget now almost three months, Mr. Paterson and leaders of the Legislature decided to insert the examined proposal into a pair of reserve laws for to finance a week’s worth of government actions.
So, the new taxes will afford $440 million in income for health care programs, including financial aid suppliers like: AIDS drugs, money for special tobacco cessation programs and $71.6 million for the state cancer research center in Buffalo.
Higher cigarette taxes have been greeted by health scientists who said that they will convince many smokers to quit smoking. However they know that high tobacco taxes would drive more customers to the black market.
