Some Of Anti-Tobacco Agencies Could Be Shut

Officials from Indiana proposed to close and eliminate the state's anti-smoking agencies and to move its services to the State Health Department, because a lot of money is spend on these kinds of agencies.
The new suggestion is intended to save the state money, but some think that it could set back prevention efforts, too. Chris Ruhl, the state's budget director, considers that shutting down the Indiana Tobacco Use Prevention and Anti-Smoking Cessation Programs, could save the state as much as $1.5 million in upper and managerial costs.
Ruhl and Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels noted that it is the only such anti-smoking agency in the Indiana state with its own budget to supervise a single health issue.
Jill Sabo, the Tobacco Free St. Joseph County Project Coordinator, declared that she found a fall in smoking influence from 26.1 to 23.1 percent.
"That is a huge decrease. At 26.1 percent, we were the second highest rate in the nation. So, anti-smoking agency is doing their job," Sabo explained.
Only West Virginia registered a higher smoking rate since 1999, when smoking rates in Indiana were at 26.9 percent. For example anti-tobacco agencies were created by state legislators for to help reduce smoking-related health care costs.
"The costs are terrible to the state," Sabo added, citing a $569 cost per family in money spent on smokers and their care. But with the state income now marched thin because of massive losses in tax revenue, even some legislators said that the anti-tobacco agency has become too expensive.
Right now Indiana's yearly tobacco prevention funding of $10.8 million is also far below national normal amount. Researchers found that states which do not spend money on smoking prevention and cessation, their economy income is much high. But unfortunately more and more youths start to smoke.
However, the state economy will suffer if existing funds from anti-tobacco agencies will disappear — because all of it coming from them, concluded researchers.
