Youth Smoking can be prevented

Only adults, especially parents, can help their teenagers to abstain forbear from tobacco.
Researchers at Umeå University in Sweden have found that adolescents in the past 20 years have become more positive to their parents' attempts to discourage smoking.
Researchers enrolled in a study a total of 13,500 young people aged 13, 15 and 17 years. The main finding is that teenagers today are more sympathetic to their parents' attempts to prevent them from smoking - whether young people smoke or not.
They found that the smoking habit of the teenagers is strongly associated with family smoking. Those with a smoking father were 40% more likely than those without a smoking father to have smoked. For those with smoking sister, the risk of ever-smoking was the highest. Those with any one smoking family member were 120% more likely than those without a smoking family member to have smoked.
The most effective actions that parents can do is to discourage smoking and to try to persuade young people to fail, not to smoke themselves, and not to allow their children to smoke at home. Young teenagers were generally more positive about these types of intervention than older teenagers.
The proportion of smokers among the respondents was 8% in 1987 and 1994, but decreased to half in the 2003 survey. This decrease is attributed to several factors, including changes in legislation against tobacco use and the decreased social tolerance towards smoking.
But instead of cigarettes, teenagers start to use snus because most of them believe that their parents would be not interested about their snus use, because they alone more like to use it.
That’s why researchers are sure that teenagers and children can be protected from smoking only by their parents. For example most of children start smoking only because their parents smoke, but if the parents will quit then children will quit too.
